THE THROWAWAYS: The works of Bob Poe

RISING Gallery is proud to present “The Throwaways”, a series of new paintings by Dallas artist, Bob Poe. This show marks Poe’s first solo exhibition at RISING Gallery.

This current series of artwork is built from pieces all around us. Referred to as The Throwaways, the pieces are collaged from a wide variety of found and purchased items – sticks, dirt and plants, electronics and other consumer goods. This style, mixed with more traditional techniques of representational and illustrative painting provides a lot of freedom and variety in the way each concept is eventually rendered. Poe says, “I enjoy playing with the juxtaposition of trompe l’oeil painting against dimensional elements. I like that it pushes the work into a grey area between 2 and 3 dimensions.”

Poe’s work has continued to progress over the years to include more mixed media elements and to further explore how those elements take shape and focus in his pieces. When asked about the refining of his process he said, “Good art is about creating something that engages a person on a number of levels. I want these objects to provoke an emotional response. I want them to jar memories and jumpstart a personal understanding of the piece. When I look at a small, plastic dinosaur, I can’t help but think about playing in the backyard as a kid. Each piece of the puzzle has a similar history that carries its own meaning for each viewer, and I like that I get to give those objects a new context.

Poe received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001. He has lived and worked in Dallas since, showing locally in numerous shows including D art Slam, Your Element and Off the Grid. In 2011 he participated in the Affordable Art Fair in New York City.

RISING Gallery with FGIIIART, is proud to present “Wonder Years,” a series of new works by The SourGrapes. “Wonder Years” will take you through the collective early years and the evolution of their lives as street artists turned fine artists. The show will feature a few early works by the SourGrapes 13 collective, as well as new works by Carlos Donjuan, Ricardo Oviedo, Artura Donjuan, Miguel Donjuan, Eddie Castro, Isaias Torres, and Emily Donjuan. The intent of the show is to dive into their pasts and show the cultural aspect involved with the collective and how their early influences have affected the growth of their work.

The SourGrapes are coming off a successful graffiti installation at the Dallas Contemporary that showcased works that paid homage to fellow graffiti artists that have passed away. Most recently they were signed by Neiman Marcus to produce the storefront windows for several of their locations.

The SourGrapes’ Dallas roots and loyalty are the soul of each of the artists. These influences are apparent in their particular styles in their graffiti work and fine art. They have developed a style that is gaining great respect throughout the graffiti and art communities. They have a respected presence throughout the region and their works are being seen more and more throughout the country.

The Sour Grapes graffiti works can be seen throughout Dallas in the numerous public works projects they have contributed to.

RISING Gallery is proud to present new paintings by Benjamin Pierce in the exhibition

Pierce’s Memorandum and Account Book. This is Pierce’s second solo exhibition

in Dallas at RISING Gallery.

After a highly successful show, The Leviathan and the Flea, in St. Louis, MO which featured some 70 pieces, Pierce has focused his attention on this new body of work. Pierce’s Memorandum and Account Book is a visual journal of the past 6 months of his life. He says, “For many, imagination is the only escape from circumstance. For those of us living in a world quick to snuff out wonder and promise, it becomes necessary to create those things for ourselves.”

Ben’s paintings, acrylic and collaged works on wood panel, welcome us into the resolutions of his surroundings. He strongly believes in the importance of the viewer to be able to find personal significance within each piece: “I hope that when you see a piece of mine, it instantly takes you back to a specific experience, good or bad, back to that person you had a crush on but never mustered up the courage to talk to, the person who broke your heart, the day when nothing could possibly go wrong, the day when nothing went right.

Studio Wetz Furniture at Rising Gallery

RISING Gallery has acquired new furniture pieces by Studio Wetz. The new 'Bryan Wetz Signature' series is a selection of chairs, side tables, and coffee tables.

This latest series of furniture is the first of many new designs aimed at the most discerning of buyers. The precision construction details, the solid woods (both domestic and exotic), and the premier finishes put the collection second to none. The entire collection is designed and handmade in Dallas, TX.

Bryan says, “after years of admiring and studying the furniture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Gerrit Reitveld , to name a few, I set out to design a series of pieces reminiscent of the past greats”. Bryan’s continued research led him back to the designers of the past to investigate scale and proportion and how to change today’s perceptions of bigger is better. (3 Leg Chair shown to right)

Some of Bryan’s custom work has been showcased in Perspectives on Design Southwest, a coffee table book by Panache Partners. The 320-page publication features hundreds of vivid photographs of the region’s most stunning homes and the industry experts’ design inspirations, philosophies and perspectives. 3rd annual PINK fundraiser at Rising Gallery a Success!

Last Saturday, October 16th, marked the third annual PINK charity event at Rising Gallery & Advisory, raising money for the Sharon Wetz Breast Cancer Fund to benefit the Cancer Support Community of North Texas through a silent art auction and fashion show featuring designs by the students of El Centro College Fashion Program.

Response was phenomenal, and with over 60 artists donating their work to a great cause, there was a lot to offer event goers. There are still some fabulous donated artworks on display and available for purchase through the end of the month for anyone who was not able to attend the evening event; 100% of those sales will go to charity. All other artwork sold at the gallery during the month of October will have a small portion of sales proceeds donated to this great cause.

Sharon Wetz Breast Cancer Fund is dedicated to assisting families living with the difficulties that come with a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Cancer Support Community of North Texas offers emotional and social support services to cancer patients and their families.

PINK 2010: 3rd Annual Fundraiser benefiting SWBCA and Cancer Support Community of North Texas

Join us this Saturday October 16, 2010 from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. as Rising Gallery hosts PINK 2010, the 3rd annual fundraiser event benefiting Sharon Wetz Breast Cancer Fund and Cancer Support Community of North Texas. PINK 2010 will feature a silent auction of artwork in the central gallery space, and a runway fashion show of garments created by students enrolled in El Centro College's fashion program. Suggested minimum donation is $20 at the door.

RISING GALLERY ARTIST ON THE COVER OF ARTS+CULTURE MAGAZINE!!

Our September exhibition, "Behind the Velvet Rope: Photographs by Chris Usher" graces this month's cover of Arts+Culture Magazine.

We have two events next week:
Wednesday September 15th join us to preview the exhibit and talk with the artist. Chris will speak and answer questions in an informal social setting beginning at 7pm. Doors will open at 6pm.

Thursday September 16th from 6-9pm we will host an opening reception with Chris in attendance.

JIM HASTINGS is a local artist who has exhibited his work in a variety of venues over the past eleven years. Hastings' work explores relationships - husbands and wives, children and parents, teachers and students, caregivers and the children over whom they watch - the building blocks of community. Hastings incorporates a personal lexicon of symbolism to illustrate the dynamics of people's social interactions with one another at their most instinctual level; conveying love, violence, joy, tragedy, immaturity, and wisdom.
















JOHN SKIBO is a Brooklyn-based artist making his Dallas debut here at Rising Gallery. Skibo's series "Change of Context" revolves around the ways in which modern-day organization of housing affects community. When creating his paintings, Skibo reflects on the process of change within an environment, of how environment is recontextualized through building or demolishing structures and how these constant changes to landscape affect community and one's ability to interact with each other in a meaningful and sustained way.

I AM WOMAN

Join RISING as we welcome and help host a great event, I AM WOMAN next Thursday, July 15, 2010, 7p-10p. This is sure to be a great event as it's an FGIII Art & McKane Organization Event. Frankie Garcia and Jeremy McKane have put a lot time & effort into making this event a great success and we are excited to have the opportunity to play host to a great event for a great cause.

Proceeds from a multi artist series within the exhibition will benefit Alley's House, a wonderful non-profit Dallas organization. Each of the participating local DFW artists donating to Alley's House series will create a 24" x 24" art piece based on femininity and the following attitudes:

FEMININITY referring to qualities uniquely attributed to women.
LOVE that drives the Artist to create.
BEAUTY in artistic creation and output.
PASSION imbued within the art.
POWER latent within the work, demanding respect.
I AM WOMAN

The entire exhibition will consist of works by several prominent female artists from the Dallas area. The Alley's House series within the exhibition will be sold and 100% of the proceeds of that series will go directly to Alley's House. The canvases for this series have been sponsored by Betsy Walker "Course of a Different Color".

We are hosting an artist mixer for photographer Kathleen Wilke tonite, Thursday June 10, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

You are warmly invited to stop by and join Rising Gallery along with photographer Kathleen Wilke on Thursday for a final chance to view Kathleen's current series "Jane Doe" in its entirety. Kathleen will be available for questions and to discuss her work.

Kathleen's photography captures figures in serene, weightless, ballet-like movements underwater which oftentimes become abstracted by surface reflections to mesmerizing effect. Be sure to mark your calendar - this is a unique opportunity to meet one of Dallas' "must collect" artists in a low key atmosphere.

Kathleen Wilke's exhibition will remain until June 15th, after which RISING will have limited selections on display throughout the summer. Running concurrently elsewhere in the gallery is an exhibition of new paintings by Chris Panatier titled, "Love Them Now, Always".
